Thallus minutely foliose-squamulose, to 6 cm wide, brownish grey. Squamules cochleate, 1–2 mm wide; margins crenate-incised becoming ±copiously lobulate-flattened, imbricate, often ascending. Lobes lobulate. Upper surface smooth, without pruina, isidia or soredia, greyish white to grey-brown at margins. Lower surface white-tomentose at margins, buff or brown centrally, with occasional tufts of black, squarrose rhizohyphae. Apothecia frequent, 0.2 mm wide; disc flat or convex, waxy, red-brown; proper exciple pale, prominent in young apothecium becoming occluded with age. Ascospores 14–16 × 6–8 µm. | ||
A species overgrowing mosses, litter and rotten wood in heath or grassland or on old bark at the base of trees. Occurs in N.S.W., Vic. and Tas., between 600–900 m; also in New Zealand in similar habitats. | ||
